One key skill that medical coding professionals will need to develop in 2025

Honestly, if you ask me, one skill which coders really need to level up in 2025 is data literacy.

Coding is not just about flipping through charts and assigning codes anymore. Those days are gone. With AI, machine learning and automation becoming part of our everyday workflow, we have got to understand how that data flows, where it’s coming from, and how to actually make sense of it.

It’s more than just picking the right code now. We need to look at what the data is telling us, free dashboards, and know when to go with the AI suggestion  and when to stop and say, wait, that doesn’t look right.

The coders who can combine strong clinical knowledge with a good grasp of data are going to stand out. They will help cut down denials, keep things compliant, and actually play a role in bigger decisions across the revenue cycle.

So yes, being tech savvy and data aware going to be just as important as knowing your CPTs and ICD-10s.
