Most significant emerging trends in medical coding 2025

Questioner

Dr. Parul , what are the most significant emerging trends you are observing in medical coding right now?

Dr. Parul

That’s a great question, I must say. According to me, there are several significant trends that are reshaping medical coding, and one of the biggest ones is automation. AI tools are getting better and better. They are helping coders work faster, but of course, they are definitely not replacing human coders yet. We still need to double-check everything because accuracy is more important than ever.

Another major trend, in my opinion, is risk adjustment coding, especially HCC. With the healthcare moving towards value-based care, it’s no longer just about treating the patient today. It’s about capturing the full picture of their health to predict future care and cost. That’s why coders who really understand coding conditions are in high demand right now. Telehealth is another big area. As we all know, after COVID, remote visit exploded and coding had to catch a fast. Now, coders need to be just as confident coding a virtual visit as they are coding a regular office appointment.

Also, compliance is also getting a lot tighter. It’s not just enough to pick the right code anymore. The documentation really has to back it up. Audits are getting much stricter, so coders have to be extra careful.

Plus, we are also seeing a bigger focus on specialty-specific coding. Feels like GI, orthopedic, cardiology, and behavioral health are evolving quickly. Coders are being pushed to specialize instead of trying to do a little bit of everything. It’s definitely a non-stop learning curve for a coder.

Even though it’s still a few years away, people have already started talking about ICD-11. It’s going to be a massive change from ICD-10, and the smart organizations are already getting ready for it. So yeah, it’s a pretty exciting time to be in medical coding. You have to be ready to keep learning and evolving.
